Distance and racism

Right now, I'm approximately 116 miles from the Mexican border.

When I was growing up, I was 1600 miles from the same border. I was in Boston--I had a discussion today with some musicians from Boston that are "alarmed" at "the end of America" because of "amnesty". When I pointed out that in the last 24 years, LA had become more "Latino" (I sussed out that the issue wasn't illegal immigration as it never really is, when they started in with "press 2 for English") and that crime and pollution was down and land values up--might as have been talking to my toenails.

I think it's the same syndrome that crazy white folks in gated communities have about "the end of our way of life"--the further removed they are from the actual human beings that terrify them the more terrified they are.

Why do you think Coeur D'Alene, in Idaho's northern tip was the capital of white power, hundreds of miles away from non whites?

It's race.

Go back 100 years ago, weren't they saying the same thing about those coming here from Eastern and Southern Europe? Go back another 50 years and it was the Irish. Regarding Los Angeles, the name itself should give away its true origins that Anglos shouldn't be bitching about today. Latinos were there before them. A lot of white folks either can't or refuse to comprehend that the America that they saw on Leave It To Beaver is no more. That to be an American means everything from white to every other shade in our skin's pigment tray, that more and more Americans are more than one race. As for English, last time I checked America had no official language but that found in the neighborhoods in the various cities and towns. You had "Press 1 For English" for a long time, it was called an ethnic neighborhood, walk into a deli in parts of Chicago or New York or LA, odds are the language was either Yiddish or German or Spanish besides English.

Posted by Johnny Venom on Jun. 11, 2013 @ 9:00 pm

The 10th Amendment forbids the federal government from establishing an official language. Many states have two official languages.

Posted by True liberal on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 9:17 am

citizenship test and interview, unless you are over 70 years old.

That is as close as needs be to an official language.

Idaho's racists are almost all California transplants. Idaho had no tradition of organized racism before Californians started moving there in the '70s.

Posted by Da Rebbe on Jun. 11, 2013 @ 9:45 pm

There are very few "Californians" who were actually born and raised in this state. Most are transplants from other states.

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 1:30 pm

Boston is a racist city. Bill Russell (an Oakland native) said as much when he was living there.

Glad to see that you escaped and de-racistsized yourself.

Taken to its illogical conclusion, proponents of the immigration "reform" seem incapable of even "debating" the necessary and proper impetus that the larger populace desires a cost/benefit analysis BEFORE our corrupted Congress "materially dilutes" the People's voting power. From whence comes this unseasonable opposition? Sadly, when I hear my fellow liberals try to stifle such a robust debate on the merits under the auspices that, well, the "subject" indirectly "relates to race" is regrettably reminiscent of the same "groupthink" learned minds rejected in the what seemed like the GOP's self-fulfilling prophecy invasion of Iraq under false pretenses. With Iraq, few people in Congress even asked "why are US taxpayer funds being diverted to 'rebuilding' Arab sovereigns not our own?" By analogy, why should US taxpayer funds be used to subsidize the "dreams" of Foreign nationals that violated our laws to enter our jurisdiction? Talk about an unconscionable subversion of the Equal Protection Clause.

What, THIS "class" of lawbreakers gets "amnesty"...but not, say, medicinal marijuana users authorized by their private physician to seek relief? That is an arbitrary expression of State Action that improperly favors a SUSPECT CLASS for mere partisan advantage. Incredibly, the Media has yet to even question whether or not such State Action is even legal. Taken to its illogical conclusion, the SAME CRITICS of the IRS "scandal" apparently have no problem with the State "singling out" Latinos for different "treatment", i.e., as long as it suits the GOP's political ends, it isn't a "scandal" to the "Conservative" Media.

What a farce.

Conspicuously, the proponents of this "amnesty" plan seem to live in this make believe world where half the Congress is not adamantly opposed to raising a THIN DIME of new revenue. And yet, inexplicably, they point to some Social Security "study", as if, in the end, there are not OTHER, substantial educational, legal, judicial, penal, health care and administrative costs that simply arise from being a member of US society. Simply "bestowing" citizenship does NOT pay for the foreseeable costs anymore than providing them an American flag shall provide shelter. These are all REAL WORLD considerations that seem to become obfuscated by placing the "race card", however ill-advised that may be, i.e., the entire "reform" purports to treat a single "class" of citizens differently under the law. I make these inferences dispassionately.

Either the State Action is impartial, or it is not impartial.

Playing the "race card" is immaterial.

What is that land of dreams to me?" - Han Shan

You mean the voting power of the white majority-minority, right? You've just don't want to admit it. The only one playing the "race card" is you.

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 11:20 am

count? Because they are white?

You're playing the race card even worse than the original writer of the piece.

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 11:35 am

I don't see where I wrote that white votes don't matter. I was pointing out your side feels threatened by non-white voters, as you indicate with your claim that they will somehow usurp your votes. As if these folks are somehow threatening, and as if their votes shouldn't count once they are citizens. (Translation: the prospect of foreigners acquiring citizenship is a threat to YOU.)

In my view, every vote counts, but I don't think that's how you see it -- not based on what you wrote. Racism is rarely expressed in an overt way. It comes out in a coded fashion, and you have to suss it out. I've learned how to read how between the lines of what you say. And it really isn't hard to figure out that you're frightened by the changing demographics, just as JAW said. Of course, you prefer to make Latinos and undocumented immigrants appear threatening when the real threat is your fearful attitude. Deal with it.

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 12:06 pm

Ballot papers don't have your race written on them. They all count the same.

The white vote is far more important because more than 60% of Americans are white, AND because white voters are more likely to actually vote.

Unless you want to subvert democracy by discounting white voters, which is what your post still sounds like to me, then you have to face it that whites still have all the wealth and power. For now anyway.

But there are black Republicans and white Communists. Your attempt to neatly pigeonhole everyone by race is just the ugly face of identity politics.

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 12:18 pm

"The white vote is far more important because more than 60% of Americans are white, AND because white voters are more likely to actually vote."

Thank you. You just made my argument for me...and my day. :)

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 1:13 pm

I'm not all hung up on race like you.

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 1:34 pm

I mean the people that are lawful citizens of the United States. You seem to imply if someone simply enters the US jurisdiction...he/she has equal rights and all Privileges and Immunities under law. That is a dubious claim, one I would like to see the authority for. Oh, and perhaps you'd cite a corollary to your "interpretation of how immigration law 'should be' in the US" in ANY other sovereign.

(cricket, cricket)

Posted by Guest on Jun. 17, 2013 @ 6:31 pm

has held that constitutional protections apply to anyone in the US, legally or not. You cannot create a class of people who are fenced off from any protection at all - that'd be a nightmare of abuse.

Posted by Lucretia Snapples on Jun. 17, 2013 @ 7:05 pm

It's actually a very nice town, despite it being "white".

(Where did this weird self-hate thing come from, whereby whites have to hate on whites? Weird.)

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 8:04 am

Real Idahoans hate the white supremacists who move there. They wish the bigots would all go back to California. In fact, if the people from all western states (and Texas) could vote on putting a wall around California, forbidding immigration of Californians, and deporting Californians back to California , they would vote for doing so overwhelmingly.

Posted by True liberal on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 9:11 am

It's self-hatred from guilt. Hopefully I don't suffer from this malady. BTW - Idaho is a great State, and obviously one the writer of the article knows virtually nothing about.

Posted by Richmondman on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 9:11 am

Californians have screwed up Idaho and the other western states, though.

Keep the illegals, deport the Californians

Posted by True liberal on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 9:16 am

No way this country is going to relinquish its breadbasket and economic gateway to Asia. On the other hand, what does Idaho have to offer besides hatemongers? Really, who needs it? Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say.

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 11:35 am

Especially considering that no one wants them?

Posted by True liberal on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 11:47 am

Why can't you stay in California and not flee like scared little rabbits just because of people with skin darker than yours?

Learn tolerance and don't mess up other peoples' states.

Posted by True liberal on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 11:51 am

Most of the Californians I know are transplanted Texans, Nevadans, Oregonians, New Yorkers, etc, and even Idahoans. There's a common perception throughout the country that Californians are happier. We have beautiful coasts and mountains and dynamic cities. Oh, and the weather couldn't be more perfect. Not to mention, a general spirit of tolerance that Idahoans can only dream of. People move here from all over the country, not away.

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 12:18 pm

"People move here from all over the country, not away."

Actually, that's not true. Of people born in the United States, more people move out of California than into California. California's population is only growing due to foreign immigration and local births.

"Not to mention, a general spirit of tolerance that Idahoans can only dream of."

California growth rate:

1990-2000 13.8%
2000-2010 10.0%

Idaho growth rate:

1990-2000 28.5%
2000-2010 21.1%

Which state is more popular, again?

Posted by Butch on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 2:33 pm

California growth rate:

1990-2000 13.8%
2000-2010 10.0%

Texas growth rate:

1990-2000 22.8%
2000-2010 20.6%

Posted by Butch on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 2:39 pm

Why can't those Californians just stay in California?

Posted by True liberal on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 8:38 pm

True lib Idaho defender, you sure don't need any help from Californians. You're doing just fine with the racism all by yourself.

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 11:40 am

Xenophobic, perhaps. But not racist, because many illegals are white, often from Ireland or Russia.

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 12:15 pm

You're grapsing at straws. It still boils down to an irrational fear of those who are different from you. And racism almost always plays some role in this, no matter how much you long to deny it. Boo!

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 1:19 pm

The only person exhibiting an "irrational fear of those who are different" is you, who is demonstrating intolerance of those who oppose illegal immigration.

Playing the race card way too much cannot mask your prejudice and hate.

Posted by Guest on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 1:36 pm

Johnny knows as much about Idaho as he knows about anything else, which isn't much.

Posted by Butch on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 2:34 pm

But you're wrong to do the same to California.

Posted by Lucretia Snapples on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 3:01 pm

I've lived in California - Johnny has never lived in Idaho.

Pointing out that there is no longer net in-migration into California by people born in the United States is "casting aspersions" on California?

It's been twenty-five years since California has grown faster in population than the United States as a whole - the idea that California is some sort of destination magnet for the rest of the country is a generation out of date.

Posted by Butch on Jun. 12, 2013 @ 3:44 pm

Why are Californians such bigots to the point that they flee their state like scared little rats just because they don't want to live with people whose skins are darker than theirs? And that includes the so called "progressive" Californians. (Malcolm X's comment that white liberals are always the first to engage in white flight when blacks move into their neighborhoods is still true, although nowadays the scared little white progressives move when brown and yellow folks move in, too.)

Posted by True liberal on Jun. 13, 2013 @ 2:15 pm

I think old gray haired white guys are stuck in your head like a tumor

Posted by guest on Jun. 13, 2013 @ 3:59 pm

≈ There's a good number of Native Americans living nearby Coeur D'Alene, despite the claims from Aryan Nations type that everybody's white for miles and miles around.

Posted by Jym Dyer on Jun. 14, 2013 @ 4:14 pm

That's the implication in some circles, and it's often uttered by white liberals, paradoxically.

It's the curse of political correctness and the guilt that it seeks to confer.

Posted by Pete on Jun. 14, 2013 @ 5:03 pm

And when is this "often uttered"? That being white is bad?

Haven't seen it in my stuff. Or anyone else's here.

Fertile imagination and/or what you wish you saw. I'm guessing too much acid or maybe glue sniffing.

You're stepping up, intellectually, now that Tim (whom you described as drab just a few days ago) is toast.
